Important Safety Tips for Teams Playing in High Heat

ANAHEIM, CA (Thursday, September 5, 2024) – Excessive heat warnings have recently been posted by the National Weather Service through next Monday. It is expected triple-digit temperatures will last through the weekend in much of Southern California, most especially in inland and desert areas away from the coastline.

With the Fall soccer season underway, it is very important that all of our members and their families be aware of the following safety guidelines in regards to high heat advisories before hitting the fields this weekend.

Before heading to any scheduled game this weekend, be sure to check with your league officials or tournament to learn of the latest status regarding playing in the extreme heat.

Referees have been instructed to allow for additional water breaks for all games this weekend. Hydration is extremely important during any heat-related weather. At any time of year – but especially in situations of high heat – be sure your players are following these crucial steps in preparing for outdoor activities…

  • Drink before, during, and after your games.
  • Drink cold water as it is absorbed by the body quicker.
  • Drink on a schedule and at every opportunity, not just when you’re thirsty.
  • Tell your coach or parent if any symptoms of dehydration begin to show. The symptoms of dehydration include headaches, nausea, dizziness, aches, and muscle cramps.

Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, etc.) may also be used after games to replenish fluids lost during activity.
