In recent weeks, we have kept our membership informed as to U.S. Soccer’s efforts regarding the debate around choosing birth year vs. school year for player registration. After U.S. Soccer collected feedback from their state associations, leagues, clubs, etc., they made an announcement last week about their plans moving forward.
What their decision means for Cal South members in the short term:
2025-2026 season: No changes to current registration and will continue with birth year.
What their decision means for Cal South members in the short term:
2026-2027 season: US Soccer has pushed “flexibility” in allowing leagues, states and governing bodies (USYS, US Club etc.) to make their best-informed decision of birth year vs school year.
US Soccer is looking to finalize guidelines this March 2025 for 2026-2027 planning. Additionally, they will be supplying training, educational forums, and guides to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.
Although their decision has provided some short-term answers, it also has created some long-term uncertainty. Please know Cal South will be working diligently with its members, US Youth Soccer, and other governing bodies as this conversation continues. Cal South’s priority will be to help continue to unify and connect the national and regional landscape and not create a further divide. Ultimately, Cal South will support and evolve based on USYS guidance and best practices for 2026-2027 and beyond.
