Celebrating Michael Almeida — August 2026 Award Winner

Recognizing Michael Almeida's leadership as a National Referee, president of Arbitros Unidos de Los Angeles (AULA), and Cal South League Operator.

Cal South and Valvoline Instant Oil Change are proud to announce August's Difference Maker award recipient, Michael Almeida. Michael is a recently appointed National Referee as well as the leader of the Arbitros Unidos de Los Angeles (AULA). Additionally, he is a League Operator for Cal South.

As a 1st year National Referee, Michael is allowed to officiate professional games in both MLS and the NWSL. As the leader of AULA, he oversees, manages, and assigns over 50 member referees, including male, female, and youth officials. Under his leadership, he oversees the referee mentorship program, which helps referees stay on top of new and changing rules and continue their education and experience through various monitoring systems.

As a League Operator for Cal South, Michael oversees the growth and implementation of the City of Bell's Youth Soccer league and serves as the main point of contact between the City of Bell and Cal South.

The AULA was founded by Michael's father, Martin Almeida, in 2004, and Michael has been president of the association since 2018. Michael is joined by his brother, Anthony, in continuing the work and effort their father put into building and establishing AULA.

Cal South Welcomes FIFA World Cup Referee Brian Hall as Director of Instruction

One of the most accomplished referee leaders in American soccer history joins the Cal South Referee Program to lead education, instruction, and mentorship across Southern California.

CAL SOUTH REFEREE PROGRAM: Cal South is proud and excited to announce the appointment of Brian Hall as Cal South Referee Program Director of Instruction, bringing one of the most accomplished and respected referee leaders in American soccer history to the Cal South Referee Program.

The Cal South Referee Program administers the United States Soccer Federation referee licensing and certification requirements throughout Southern California and provides referee services and support to affiliated leagues, tournaments, competitions, and organizations operating within the U.S. Soccer ecosystem. With thousands of registered referees and a comprehensive development pathway extending from grassroots officials to the professional and international levels, the Cal South Referee Program continues to lead the country in referee development, education, advancement, mentorship, and innovation.

The appointment of Brian Hall represents another major step forward in that mission.

From the Grassroots to the FIFA World Cup

Brian's extraordinary career has taken him from the grassroots fields of American soccer to the greatest stage in the sport — the FIFA World Cup. A FIFA International Referee, Brian represented the United States at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, where he was entrusted with two group-stage appointments:

Italy vs. Ecuador
England vs. Nigeria

Those assignments placed Brian in the center of World Cup matches featuring some of the greatest players of that generation, including David Beckham, Paolo Maldini, Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Francesco Totti, Alessandro Del Piero, Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, and Jay-Jay Okocha. Reaching the FIFA World Cup represents the pinnacle of achievement for a referee, and Brian's selection to represent the United States on the world's biggest stage remains an extraordinary accomplishment in American refereeing.

Brian also established himself as one of Major League Soccer's most distinguished referees, earning multiple MLS Referee of the Year honors during an outstanding career on the field. But Brian Hall's legacy in refereeing extends far beyond the matches he officiated.

A Career Dedicated to Developing Referees

Following his active refereeing career, Brian dedicated the next chapter of his career to developing the officials who would follow him. His leadership experience has included significant referee development responsibilities with U.S. Soccer, the professional game, and serving as Director of Refereeing for Concacaf, where his work influenced referee education, assessment, development, and performance throughout North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Through these roles, Brian has helped mentor, educate, and develop referees ranging from grassroots officials to those preparing for professional and international competition. Now, that experience, knowledge, leadership, and passion for referee education are coming directly to Cal South.

Leading the Next Generation of Cal South Referees

As Cal South Referee Program Director of Instruction, Brian will oversee and help advance the instructional and educational components of the Cal South Referee Program. His focus will include strengthening referee education, developing instructors, expanding innovative training opportunities, enhancing continuing education, and helping create meaningful pathways for referees at every stage of their development.

Brian will also officially join the Cal South State Referee Committee, working alongside the referee administration leadership team to help shape the continued strategic direction and development of the program. Together, the State Referee Committee will continue building upon the strong foundation established within Cal South while pursuing an ambitious goal:

To establish the Cal South Referee Program as the national standard for referee education, innovation, development, mentorship, and advancement.

"Brian Hall's impact on refereeing extends far beyond the matches he has officiated or the leadership positions he has held. Throughout his career, Brian has been a mentor, educator, and role model to thousands of referees — from young officials beginning their journey to referees preparing to perform on the world's biggest stages.

For me personally, this appointment carries a very special meaning. Brian played an important role in my own development as a referee and was a source of guidance and support throughout my journey toward reaching the highest levels of the game. I experienced firsthand his ability to see potential in referees, challenge them to grow, and give them the confidence and knowledge necessary to pursue their goals.

Brian's commitment to teaching the game and developing people has become an important part of his legacy. His knowledge and experience are extraordinary, but what has always distinguished Brian is his willingness to share that knowledge and invest in others.

To now have a FIFA World Cup referee — someone who has stood in the center of matches involving some of the greatest players in the history of our sport and who has gone on to lead referee development at the highest levels of the game — dedicate his experience to the education and development of Cal South referees is incredibly special.

We are extremely fortunate to welcome Brian to our State Referee Committee and leadership team. I am excited to work alongside him as we continue building a referee program that sets the standard nationally for education, innovation, opportunity, and development. Most importantly, Brian's impact will not only be felt by the referees we serve today. Cal South Supports Historic Integration of US Youth Soccer and U.S. Soccer

State Associations helped shape the decision, and will play an even larger role in creating new opportunities to strengthen soccer in communities across the country.

ANAHEIM, Calif., August 29, 2026: Today, Cal South joined State Associations across the country in supporting a historic step to make US Youth Soccer (USYS) part of U.S. Soccer, bringing the organizations closer together to invest more in local soccer and create better experiences for players and families, and creating greater alignment across the game and new opportunities to strengthen soccer locally.

USYS State Associations voted to approve the change during their Annual General Meeting, which will begin a two-year integration process on September 1. The decision brings USYS’s decades of experience and reach across youth soccer closer together with U.S. Soccer’s resources and national scale.

Partnership gives Cal South families a discount on SogilityGO and a structured way to support purposeful training between team sessions.

ANAHEIM, Calif., August 25, 2026: Cal South, the official youth and adult state soccer association for Southern California, has named SogilityGO its Preferred At-Home Player Development Partner.

The partnership gives Cal South players and families access to a structured at-home soccer training system designed to complement coaching, team training, and games. Cal South members will also receive a discount on purchases of SogilityGO products.

SogilityGO combines three connected tools. The Virtual Coach provides the plan, the Impact Light gives responsive visual cues, and ReboundIQ delivers soccer-specific physical repetition. Together, the system helps players train independently without guessing what to work on next.

Cal South and Valvoline Instant Oil Change are proud to acknowledge this month’s Difference Maker of the Month award winner. This award is presented to an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership, dedication, and commitment to making a positive impact within the soccer community.

This month’s award winner is Bernard "Bernie" Towers.

For more than three decades, Bernie Towers has been a driving force behind the growth and success of Coast Soccer League (CSL). His dedication, leadership, and forward-thinking approach have helped shape one of Southern California's premier youth soccer leagues, leaving a lasting impact on thousands of players, coaches, referees, and families.

Bernie began his journey with Coast Soccer League in 1996, when the league consisted of approximately 300 teams. Through years of commitment and service, he has witnessed—and helped guide—the league's remarkable growth to more than 1,300 teams today.

Throughout his tenure, Bernie has served in several leadership roles, including as a member of the Board of Directors and President of Coast Soccer League. While he is proud of many accomplishments during his time with CSL, one achievement stands out above the rest: embracing technology to improve the league's operations.

Under Bernie's leadership, Coast Soccer League became one of the first youth soccer leagues to adopt innovative technology solutions. From implementing email communication and digital scheduling to introducing scorekeeping applications and other management tools, these advancements transformed the way the league operated. Referees, administrators, coaches, and volunteers all benefited from faster communication, improved efficiency, and a more streamlined experience.

Looking ahead, Bernie's vision for Coast Soccer League remains rooted in accessibility. His hope is to continue providing affordable opportunities for players, teams, and families, ensuring that children from every economic background have the chance to experience the joy and lifelong benefits of The Beautiful Game.

Cal South, Skyline Pitch, and UASA partner to expand adaptive soccer access across southern california

United Adaptive Soccer Association Announces Skyline Adaptive Soccer Community Kickoff in Glendale

United Adaptive Soccer Association (UASA), in partnership with Skyline Pitch and CalSouth, will host the Skyline Adaptive Soccer Community Kickoff on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Skyline Pitch in Glendale, California.

The free community event is designed for players of any age with disabilities and will create an inclusive, athlete-centered soccer experience for participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities, amputee soccer athletes, athletes with dwarfism, mobility disabilities, and other adaptive sport pathways. Volunteers, families, community partners, media, and supporters are also welcome.

The event comes at a timely moment for Southern California, where there is already a strong presence of power chair soccer players, athletes who qualify for amputee soccer, athletes with dwarfism, and many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are looking for more ways to play. The goal is simple and necessary: grow meaningful access to the beautiful game so more athletes have safe, inclusive, and sustainable places to participate.

“UASA’s motto is ‘So All May Play,’ and this event reflects that directly,” said Joslynn Bigelow, President of United Adaptive Soccer Association. “This is not about creating a one-day feel-good event. These are athletes participating in sport, just like any other athletes. What makes this necessary is that society has not yet made it common enough for athletes with disabilities to have safe, inclusive, and consistent places to play.”

Skyline Pitch brings a unique and forward-thinking venue partner to the project. From adaptive soccer work in Chicago, including connections to amputee soccer, to the opportunity now taking shape in Los Angeles and Glendale, Skyline is helping demonstrate what it can look like when a soccer venue thinks beyond traditional programming.

Ivan Lopez of Skyline has been instrumental in helping move the effort forward with an open, creative approach to space, access, and community-building. Juan Guzmán Jr. of CalSouth, a respected national figure in soccer leadership, brings regional credibility, soccer infrastructure, and long-term development vision. Together, Skyline, CalSouth, and UASA are laying groundwork for adaptive soccer growth across Southern California through 2028 and beyond.

“Bringing these partners together matters,” Bigelow said. “Skyline is willing to think outside the box. CalSouth has the reach and soccer leadership to help build something sustainable. UASA brings the adaptive soccer lens and national pathway perspective. That combination is what makes this more than a single event.” 

The player experience will include supported soccer activities, adaptive soccer stations, and small-sided play. From approximately 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, programming will prioritize players who may experience higher impacts of disability, including younger athletes, athletes with lower cognitive processing needs, athletes using mobility frames or chairs, and athletes who may benefit from closer support. This session will be led by Joslynn Bigelow in collaboration with volunteers of all abilities, with the goal of creating a fun, safe, and accessible environment for all participants.

From approximately 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, higher-soccer-ability players will take the pitch, including athletes with lower-impact intellectual/developmental disabilities, amputee soccer athletes, athletes with dwarfism, and other adaptive soccer participants. During this block, coach education candidates will apply their learning in live field sessions with adaptive athletes.

An important component of the event is an adaptive coaching education experience built from U.S. Soccer’s traditional 7v7 Grassroots coaching certification pathway. The course content remains grounded in the traditional grassroots model, while accommodations are built in for mixed-ability coaching candidates. This includes additional processing time, support for personal needs, and direct discussion of the nuances involved in coaching mixed-ability populations.

The coaching course will be led by Mike Pellicio of Spokane, Washington. Coaching candidates will participate in classroom learning before moving into applied field sessions with athletes during the event.

Future events may also turn turf into court space to welcome the region’s significant power chair soccer community. Power soccer remains an important adaptive soccer pathway in Southern California, and UASA hopes this kickoff becomes a first step toward broader programming across multiple adaptive
soccer disciplines.

There is no cost for players or their loved ones to participate. Community partners interested in supporting the event financially, contributing in-kind support, tabling onsite, providing participant swag bag items, or volunteering can contact UASA at info@unitedadaptivesoccer.com.

Media are welcome onsite for check-in between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM and may stay through 2:00 PM. Interviews may be pre-arranged or requested onsite. Print, visual, audio, digital, and bilingual media are encouraged.

U.S. Men’s National Team Roster Reveal Airs Live Tomorrow

The nation’s wait is almost over. The U.S. Men’s National Team players representing the Stars and Stripes this summer will be revealed live on FOX.

The moment the nation has been waiting for is almost here. Tomorrow, the U.S. Men’s National Team players who will represent the Stars and Stripes this summer on the world stage will be revealed.

U.S. Soccer shared that the live event at the Rooftop at Pier 17 has reached capacity and registrations are now closed. Fans who registered should note that registration does not guarantee entry, as entry will be first come, first served.

Fans across the country are encouraged to tune in to the live Roster Reveal broadcast on FOX from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. ET.

Community clinics and celebration events throughout May continue building momentum toward the World Cup across Southern California.

Throughout the month of May, Cal South is supporting the Grow the Game of Soccer Clinic Series across Los Angeles alongside the Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host Committee, helping connect youth players, families, coaches, referees, and community partners through soccer-focused community programming leading into World Cup LA.

As part of the Host Committee’s ongoing legacy efforts, the clinic series focuses on expanding access to the game while creating engaging soccer experiences throughout Southern California communities. Events are taking place at locations across the region, including Galaxy Park in Carson and Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles, bringing together players and families through youth clinics, mentorship opportunities, celebration events, and interactive soccer programming.

Cal South staff, coaches, referees, and community partners are helping support programming designed to encourage participation at every level of the game — from playing and coaching to officiating and leadership development. In collaboration with organizations including the Play Equity Fund, LA Galaxy, and the Center for Healing and Justice through Sport (CHJS), the initiative highlights how the momentum surrounding the Los Angeles World Cup continues creating meaningful local impact throughout Los Angeles and Southern California.

Additional clinics and community engagement events continue throughout the summer as Cal South and its partners work to expand access to soccer while celebrating the game across communities ahead of World Cup LA.
