Boys wrap up first National League event of 2025-26 season

MESA, Ariz. (Nov. 2, 2025) — Three exciting days of play at the National League winter event in Mesa, Ariz., saw 30 boys teams secure spots in postseason competition, with 15 of those sides punching their ticket to the 2026 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life.

Each of the National Championship qualifiers finished first in their four-team group in Mesa. Meanwhile, second-place finishers in each winter event group will advance to either the National Championships or the inaugural edition of The National League Cup.

“It was amazing playing against the best clubs in the country and we’re very proud of the club and what the boys did today,” Strikers Miami FC 09 Elite (FL) coach Diego Rios said. “We now have six months to prepare (for Nationals). We’re going to work really hard and try to bring the second National Championship to our club. We did it two years ago and now that’s what we’re aiming for.”

The postseason destination for second-place teams is dependent on tiebreakers across all groups at both sets of winter events. Following the conclusion of the January winter event, all tiebreakers will be completed to determine all advancing teams’ postseason destinations.

This weekend’s games in Mesa featured top boys teams in the 14U-19U age groups from the National League’s club-based and team-based divisions, as each competing side earned its place in the event through its performance in league competitions over the past season.

The 15 teams that qualified for the National Championships came from eight different USYS State Associations, led by Cal South and Florida with four each.

Among clubs in attendance, Legends FC SD North’s two teams to qualify for Nationals were the most.

Expanding to all postseason qualifiers, 13 different USYS State Associations saw teams finish in the top two of their four-team groups in Mesa. Cal South led the way with five teams that earned a postseason berth.

Five clubs — Evo PFC (IL), IFC (MS), Legends FC SD North (CA-S), Spartans FC Academy (AZ), and Los Angeles SC (CA-S) — had at least two teams earn a postseason berth, with Evo PFC being the only club to have three teams advance.

The National League winter events continue next weekend, as the first set of girls teams play Nov. 7-9. Following those games, a new set of teams — for both boys and girls — will compete Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2026, to round out the winter events.

US Youth Soccer Announces Major Format Change to National Championship Series

A quick Cal South note before reading this article: For the purposes of this USYS press release, the term “State Cup” should be read as “National Cup” instead. Cal South’s annual National Cup competition is our version of the State Cups hosted by the other US Youth Soccer state association affiliates. What we actually promote as “State Cup” is our competition – via our Presidents Division level – which leads to the USYS Presidents Cup Series. Thank you.

FRISCO, Texas (Sept. 23, 2025) – US Youth Soccer (USYS), the largest youth sport organization in the country, is proud to announce a landmark format change to its National Championships aimed at creating the best youth sport experience in America. Beginning with the current season, State Cup champions from all 54 USYS State Associations will advance directly to the National Championships, eliminating the traditional Regional Championship round. New York Life will remain the presenting sponsor for the event.

This exciting evolution of the “crown jewel” of USYS competition is designed to:

Enhance the value and visibility of State Cups as the core qualifying events.
Streamline the championship pathway to reduce travel demands and ease the overall burden on families.
Celebrate tradition while embracing progress, to deliver a more focused, player-centered experience at the national level.

Why This Matters:

Direct Advancement: Each State Cup champion along with group winners from The National League Winter Events earns a place at Nationals, ensuring representation and increased relevance for all 54 member associations.
Reduced Barriers: Families and clubs benefit from less travel and time commitment with the elimination of the regional competition layer.

This format change was made following extensive feedback from member associations, clubs, coaches, and families, and reflects USYS’ strategic vision to enhance its competition structure while providing the most meaningful and memorable national stage for young athletes. More details about the updated National Championships including qualification timelines, hosting information, and event enhancements, will be released in the coming weeks.

To accompany the new format, a visionary new brand identity was developed to represent the competition. The three vertical elements are not only meant to evoke the shape of a trophy, acknowledging the US Youth Soccer National Championships as the premier event in youth sport, but also symbolize the coming together of every State Association, along with The National League, to one point of action — the ball.

Utilizing the same design as the ball in the USYS logo, only part of it is visible as it is in motion — approaching the plane of the goal. It is not yet fully across the line, signifying the potential to score or be defended…a dramatic representation of the tension foundational to our love of soccer. The entire logo is unbounded by a containing shape like a shield or crest, highlighting that the event is bigger than something that can be contained by traditional borders and structures.

The reimagined US Youth Soccer National Championships are a bold new vision of how our entire soccer landscape can come together, and this rebranding of our Championship logo communicates the passion, youthful energy, and forward-thinking of USYS and our State Associations.

38 Cal South Pro+ ODP Players Named to USYS ODP West Region Rosters for Upcoming Interregionals

FRISCO, TX (Tuesday, August 19, 2025) – Cal South’s PRO+ Olympic Development Program (ODP) had 38 of its talented players selected to West Regional rosters last week for this year’s US Youth Soccer ODP Interregional teams.

The announcement on US Youth Soccer’s website last Friday, August 15 was in regard to boys and girls selected from the 14 western state associations ODP training pools in the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 age groups. Because of the larger numbers of players chosen in the 2012 and 2013 age groups, players were split into Olders and Youngers divisions.

In all, 13 boys and 25 girls from Cal South’s ODP pools were selected across the eight age groups. The West Regional teams will next play against the other three regional teams (East, Midwest, South) at the US Youth Soccer ODP Interregionals later this winter. The Boys Interregional will be held January 16-19, 2026 and the Girls Interregional will be held January 22-26, 2025. Both events will take place at the ChampionsGate Sports Field Complex, 1500 Masters Boulevard, ChampionsGate, Florida.

“We are very proud of our players who have worked so hard to achieve placement on the Western region team rosters,” said Michael Chin, Cal South Director of Coaching Education and Player Development. “The talent and skill of our 38 selected boys and girls are a testament to the strength and consistency of our leagues and clubs, and Cal South Pro+ ODP, in developing players at a high level.”

Orlando, FL (Tuesday, July 22, 2025) – Cal South has seven teams competing this week at the 2025 US Youth Soccer National Championships, being held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, July 22-27.

Each summer US Youth Soccer crowns a 13U-19U Boys and Girls national champion after a culmination of year-long competitions at the state and regional levels during the National Championships presented by New York Life. Consisting of approximately 185,000 players on 10,000 teams from USYS’ 54 State Associations, it offers the opportunity to showcase your talent against the best competition in the nation.

Cal South’s teams earned their berths from their play in the 2025 Cal South National Cup tournament followed by the 2025 USYS Far West Regionals in Boise in June, or from their play in the USYS National League Pacific Conference’s Elite 64 competition.

Three days of bracket play lead off the event Tuesday through Thursday, July 22-24. After a day off on Friday for the 14U-19U teams, the semifinals round will occur on Saturday, July 26, and then the finals round closes out the National Championships for the year on Sunday, June 27.

Cal Elite SC captures the Girls 18U/19U title at the 2025 US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals

Boise, ID (Wednesday, June 24, 2025) – Cal South’s Cal Elite SC won their Girls 18U/19U finals round match this morning at the 2025 US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals with a 2-1 victory over host Idaho’s Global Sports Academy. The event was held at the Simplot Sports Complex in Boise, ID from June 20-25, 2025.

Cal South had three teams that made yesterday’s semifinals round: Boys 13U Chivas Academy DSP, Girls 18U/19U Cal Elite SC, and Girls 15U Oxnard United. Each earned their spots in the semis by finishing atop their brackets within their respective age groups following the three opening days of play at the tournament. Only Cal Elite made it to the finals round with a 2-0 shutout over Washington’s Northwest United. Cal South began the tournament with 17 teams competing in the Bracket Play rounds.

A dozen of Cal South’s teams earned their berths in the regionals via their play in the 2025 Cal South National Cup earlier this year. Four other teams earned a spot from their success in the Pacific Conference competition, and a fifth was invited via Elite 64.

Three days of bracket play lead off the event through the weekend. After a day off on Monday, the semifinals round occurred on Tuesday, June 24th leading into today’s finals.

Teams were competing for a chance to move forward to the 2025 US Youth Soccer National Championships, which will take place from July 22-27 in Orlando, Florida. Each summer US Youth Soccer crowns a 13U-19U Boys and Girls national champion after a culmination of year-long competitions at the state and regional levels during the National Championships presented by New York Life. Cal South Announces Aug. 1st as Seasonal Year Age Group Registration Start Date

Anaheim, CA (Wednesday, June 18, 2025) – After a full review, Cal South officially announces that it will align with US Youth Soccer in accepting August 1st as the Seasonal Year age group formation start date. Even though USYS will begin using it in the Fall of 2026-2027, Cal South plans to begin using seasonal year registration in the Spring of 2026 to allow clubs to get acclimated to the new system.

The move is being made to ease registration alignment for all leagues, clubs, teams and players in our region – based on school year not birth year, per U.S. Soccer’s decision earlier this year – regardless of affiliation with any particular organization.

The seasonal year will run from Aug. 1 through July 31, rather than Sept. 1 through Aug. 31 as many organizations, including Cal South, had previously announced. This change will NOT affect the upcoming Fall 2025-2026 season at all.

Boise, ID (Tuesday, June 17, 2025) – Legends FC San Diego spun a 2-0 shutout over Nevada’s Las Vegas Elite FC to capture the Boys 2012/13U title on the final day of competition today at the 2025 US Youth Soccer Far West Presidents Cup. The event was held at the Simplot Sports Complex from June 13-17, 2025.

Cal South started out with a dozen teams taking part in the Far West Presidents Cup. Each of the teams earned their berths in the weekend’s competition via their play in the 2025 Cal South State Cup tournament. Three days of bracket play lead off the event through the weekend (Friday to Sunday), with the semifinals round on Monday, June 16th, and the finals round on Tuesday, June 17th.

Legends FC San Diego were competing for a chance to move forward to the 2025 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, which will take place from July 11-15 in Tampa Bay, Florida.

This year the following teams advance to the National Presidents Cup:

– 18/19U: CHAMPION ONLY

Dates announced for events to be played in Mesa, Ariz.

FRISCO, Texas (June 12, 2025) — The National League is excited to announce the dates and locations for its winter events for the 2025-26 season. These events provide participating teams with chances to qualify for the 2026 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life, and the inaugural edition of The National League Cup.

Each winter event will take place at the Arizona Athletic Grounds, in Mesa, Ariz.

The winter events are open to only teams playing The National League in the 2025-26 season, and team applications are now being accepted for the events. All teams must apply to participate in a winter event, and the deadline to apply is July 7, 2025.

Each participating team will play at one of the two event options. Competition is available for boys and girls teams that are playing in the 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U and 19U age groups during the 2025-26 youth soccer season.

Teams will be accepted for the winter events based on their history of performance — giving any applying team the chance to earn its way into the highly competitive field. Within each age group, 40 total teams will compete in the winter events, with the teams divided evenly among two events (20 teams per event).

At the events, teams are split into five groups of four, and each team plays its three group opponents over three days. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.

Teams that finish in first place in their four-team group will advance to the 2026 USYS National Championships as a National League representative. Teams that finish in second place in their four-team group at the winter events will earn a spot into The NL Cup at the end of the 2025-26 season.

US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO Returning to Seasonal-Year Age Group Formation in 2026

FRISCO, Texas (March 5, 2025) – US Youth Soccer (USYS), US Club Soccer, and American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), today announced that they have agreed to adopt the seasonal year age group formation cycle for its players starting with each’s 2026-27 season. USYS Board Chair Tina Rincon, US Club Soccer CEO Mike Cullina, and AYSO National President Doug Ryan made the announcement.

The cycle, which will run from September 1 to August 31, represents the opportunity for more players in each system to play club-based soccer with their classmates.

Rincon, Cullina, and Ryan offer the following statement:

“The three organizations coming together to put our nation’s youth soccer players first is a positive move. Soccer, regardless of the level of competition, is meant to be fun – and it is more fun when players can play with their friends and classmates. This decision is the right move for the millions playing in each of our respective systems and we are thrilled to establish this standard and find common ground.”

The decision stems from a U.S. Soccer Federation policy put in place late in 2024 empowering member organizations to be the decision-maker on the registration choices for leagues and competitions that they sanction and/or run.

Rincon, who also serves as the U.S. Soccer Youth Council Chair, detailed the following on behalf of the council:

“We are excited that the three largest member organizations have aligned to make a decision that will bring the youth soccer landscape together, rather than further fracturing it. We received input from a variety of sources that helped us reach this decision and meet our goal of increasing participation in our sport. We look forward to continuing to work with other member organizations to make the best choices for youth soccer players and continue collaborating with clubs and leagues to ensure a smooth transition next year.”

The three organizations’ registration parameters will not change for next season (2025-26) and will affect rostering beginning in August 2026.

Aligning with the school-year calendar is a return to a policy in place prior to a 2016 U.S. Soccer decision to move to birth-year registration (January 1 – December 31). The change was made in effort to align with international soccer standards.

Youth players born before September 1 will have the opportunity to play up with older age groups in accordance with their club’s governance.

U.S. Soccer performed an assessment of available data (e.g., 2020 U.S. Census & National Center for Education Statistics) and qualitative feedback and determined that September 1 represents most school districts’ calendars (~68%) across the country.

Schedule announced for 2025 USYS National League Semifinals in Oceanside in May

The National League Semifinals will feature boys and girls teams in the 14U through 19U age groups. The girls will play May 2-4, and the boys will play May 3-6. All games in Oceanside will be played at the SoCal Sports Complex.

The teams playing in Oceanside each earned their place in the event through their performance at National League Quarterfinals earlier this season. At the semifinals, teams will be competing for a chance to advance to the 2025 USYS National Championships, presented by New York Life, as each gender will see six teams per age group qualify for Nationals during the event.

“We just completed the first semifinal event — filled with excitement and high-level, meaningful games — and now we cannot wait for more of the top National League teams to come together in Oceanside,” said Marc Frankland, USYS National League General Manager. “This is a truly unique competition in the youth soccer landscape, featuring both club-based and team-based competitors, and having spots to the National Championships on the line adds even more excitement to the event’s atmosphere.”

In addition to the gameplay, the National League is working with Exact Sports to host college coach panels that provide insider tips about the recruiting process straight from college coaches. There will be four total panels — two focused on women’s soccer and two focused on men’s soccer — on Saturday, May 3. The women’s college panels will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., while the men’s college panels will take place at 3:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

The action in California will include teams representing 30 different USYS State Associations, led by Cal South with 50 teams. Florida has the second-most teams with 22, followed by Utah with 15. The field of competing teams will feature three defending USYS National Champions looking to get one step closer to defending their titles.

Teams playing in Oceanside are divided into pools within each age group, with pool placement based on performance from the quarterfinal events earlier this season. The Champions Pool features the top-performing teams, followed by the Silver Pool and then the Wildcard Pool. Visit the event homepage to view a breakdown of the pools.

The semifinals feature a primarily tournament/bracket style schedule. In Oceanside, all age groups will see four teams qualify for the National Championships directly from the Champions Pool. The Silver Pool will qualify one team to the National Championships, and the Wildcard Pool will qualify one team to the National Championships. Qualification criteria may vary in certain age groups with fewer total teams.

Teams that qualify for the National Championships during play in Oceanside will join the teams that punched their ticket to Nationals during the first semifinal in Round Rock, Texas. Together, they’ll make up the 120 National League representatives at this summer’s National Championships.
