The Sunday afternoon that the 2017 Cal South State Cup Presidents 2005 Division Championship was set to take place at Galway Downs in Temecula was going to be a very busy one for Palm Desert SC Coach Oscar Cervantes. Not only did he have one final to worry about, but two, coaching both the Boys and the Girls side in the same division.
While the Boys game kicked off at 1:00 pm, the Girls Final kicked off 30 minutes later. While both games were going, those in attendance could see coach Cervantes running back and forth between games, giving instructions to his players before running back to his other team.
The Girls side suffered a 1-0 loss to FC Golden State, while the Boys celebrated their 3-0 win over Barcelona California, a bittersweet moment for Coach Cervantes.
“I knew it was going to be a tough team but I knew that if my boys did their job, I knew that they would come out on top,” the Palm Desert SC coach said after both finals.
“It’s another step in the progress of these boys. Last year we were in the Governors Division, we won that. This year, this was what was next in line and we’ve gotta keep moving forward and I see this as just another step,” he added.
To get two teams to the Cal South State Cup Final is a huge accomplishment for the coach, though he fully credits all his players on their hard work and dedication to the game that has helped them get this far. Game in and game out, Coach Cervantes demanded the most out of his players, not cutting any slack or taking it easy on them, nothing less than what should be expected from the top teams in Southern California.
“There’s a lot of great teams in Southern California, it’s one of the best spots for soccer in the country. Growing up with my older son playing, I’ve seen some of the best players in the country out here with Cal South so these players are not easy to come by,” he finalized.
