With the Cal South National Cup Boys 2003 Championship Final between Oxnard United SC and Total Futbol Academy, spectators were in for a good, balanced and exciting game between two of the top 32 teams in Southern California.
In the end, the game came down to just one goal, and Oxnard United was the lucky one to get the ball into the back of the net for the ultimate 1-0 victory. For Oxnard United coach Jose Luis Garcia and his team, the championship not only meant a payoff for this season’s performance, but for years of work.
“For the tournament it is, for what we’re representing, for me, it’s very important,” coach Garcia said. “I started coaching this team since they were five-years-old. For many years I’ve been getting to the final, but haven’t won. That’s why I’m very happy that I’ve been able to win in this type of important tournament as it is with Cal South.”
Now, Oxnard United will have to represent Cal South in another greater tournament, as is the 2017 US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals that will take place from June 19-25 in Seattle. There, they will face some of the top competition from all over the Region IV area. With great knowledge of the talent in Southern California and what his team has achieved, coach Garcia knows that his team can get the job done because of the type of players he has.
“Aside from the fact that they love soccer, they believe in what they can do and they play as a team,” he said. “If you watch the game, they all play for the team; I don’t have stars, I have players that play with heart.”
