Mesoamerica FC finished in Third Place in the 2019 USASA National Amateur Cup that took place over the weekend at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois. The 2019 Cal South Adult State Cup Champions defeated locals RWB Adria Chicago 6-2.
The tournament kicked off on Friday, with Mesoamerica facing Southern Texas team Horizon FC in the National Semifinal. Before the end of the first half, Horizon FC took care of business, taking a 2-0 lead over Mesoamerica. Returning onto the second half, Mesoamerica closed the Texan team’s lead as they knocked in the 2-1 in the 77th minute. A penalty in favor of Horizon in the 82nd minute threatened Mesoamerica, but a missed shot allowed the Cal South Champion to close the gap in the remaining minutes. Despite putting up a battle on the field, Mesoamerica missed their chance to move on the Championship Final, falling 2-1.
On Saturday afternoon, playing for the Third Place in the National Amateur Cup, Mesoamerica matched up against local team RWB Adria Chicago. The Illinois-based opponent fell 2-0 in Friday’s Semifinal to eventual National Amateur Cup Champion, Newton Pride FC. Despite having a tough Semifinal match, Mesoamerica showed off its talent, earning a 6-2 win over RWB, and finishing among the top three in the country.
In addition to Mesoamerica, Cal South Referee Samantha Martinez was also at the tournament, officiating the Championship Final between Horizon FC and Newtown Pride FC.
