Over 30 Men’s Team San Nicolas Wins Cal South Adult State Cup

Fullerton, CA (June 27, 2022) – Cal South adult soccer squad, the LA Strikers, defeated Peak XI FC yesterday on the road in Lafayette, Colorado to win the United States Adult Soccer Association Region IV Amateur Cup title in the Men’s Open Division.

The Strikers topped Peak XI 3-1 on a pair of goals from Alex Mendez (in the 45th and 80th minutes) after teammate Jordan Lopez started the scoring off with a goal in the 40th minute.

The team next moves on to the USASA National Amateur Cup Men’s Open Championship, which will be held in Chicago, Illinois on August 5-6, 2022. The event will feature the other three regional Men’s Open champions, who will determine a National Champion first via a semifinals round and then a championship finale.

Before the Region IV Amateur Cup competition rolled around, two clubs won big at the 2022 Cal South Adult State Cup, which was held on the weekend of June 11-12 at the San Bernardino Soccer Complex. In addition to the LA Strikers’ win in the Men’s Open division, San Nicolas captured the Men’s Over 30 State Cup title. Here’s a brief look at these successful teams…

LA Strikers is an amateur team based out of the Los Angeles area. The team was founded in 2017 and initially made up of cousins and friends playing in Liga Deportivo Morazán in Los Angeles.

This year, in their second time playing in the Cal South Adult State Cup, the Strikers faced MesoAmerica FC in the Men’s Open division final. After a 1-1 regulation, they defeated Meso 5-4 in penalty kicks to capture their first Cal South Adult State Cup final and send themselves to the USASA regional competition. Of special note is that 15 of the 21 players on the Strikers roster had previously played youth soccer on a Cal South-affiliated club.

San Nicolas is an amateur club based out of Los Angeles, CA. The club has been around for over 20 years and is owned by club president Jaime Perez. They currently play in the LA Premier League and are affiliated with Cal South.

This year was the second time San Nicolas has participated in the Cal South Adult State Cup, and like the Strikers, this was the first time they won their division. Also like Strikers, San Nicolas had drawn with their opponent – Lobos FC Jaliciense – 1-1 after regulation, and then topped the Lobos, 4-3 in PKs to take the State Cup title and the prize money. Additionally, San Nicolas has won 2 national tournaments in Alianza, and won regional tournaments in San Jose, Arizona, and Los Angeles.
