The Cal South State Cup Governors Division Youngers came to a close on Sunday afternoon after six champions were crowned in Temecula’s Galway Downs. The teams ranged from the 12U to 14U Boys and Girls.
For coach Juan Vallin of Team USA SC, returning to the Cal South State Cup was going to be a challenge. After all, his 14U boys team were crowned champions in last year’s contention, which only meant they had to work harder, building trust, confidence and conditioning.
“This year it’s some of the guys from last year, but everybody had to work a little harder this year than last year and that’s what makes [this championship] special,” he said.
For the Governors Division 13U Girls Champions Pateadores Laguna, participating in the 40th Anniversary of the Cal South State Cup was a new challenge. Coming from the recreational side into club soccer, coach Earl Alexander worked with the girls and they did not disappoint, putting in the work and dedication to clinch the State Cup Championship.
“To see where they’ve come from last season to now, because we’ve had a lot of losses, disappointments, I told them to experience this and it’s just going to help you grow and your day will come,” the Pateadores Laguna coach said. “They put all the hard work, the grind and it paid off and I’m proud of each and every one of them.”
Also on their first year participating in the Cal South State Cup, OC United coach Jose Sorto knew from the beginning that his team was destined to something greater. Overcoming all obstacles and making it to the final against hometown rival LA Galaxy OC, coach Sorto’s 12U boys team came up just one last time to clinch their Division’s title, fulfilling their season objective.
“When we were at the first game in Lancaster, I told them before starting [the game], ‘I see us in the final on February 25,’” he said. “Everyone believed in me, I believed in them and we worked hard to get to where we are.”
The final Cal South State Cup Youngers play will take place this Sunday as the Presidents Division closes action with its final champions being crowned at Galway Downs. Championship teams in the 13U and 14U age group automatically qualify to the 2018 US Youth Soccer Far West Presidents Cup tournament that will take place in mid-June in Salt Lake City.
