When the season started for Santa Barbara SC 2005 White last Fall, it didn’t quite go as planned. The team underwent several obstacles, from a change in their coaching staff to having to deal with several injuries, something that hurt the team on the field as they didn’t earn as many wins as they would’ve wanted.
Coming into the Cal South State Cup Governors Division, the team’s objective was to win one game. But as the tournament went on, and they continued adding wins, Santa Barbara SC Coach Waid Ibrahim knew his players were up to something good.
“I think since the second game of State Cup, I can probably say they’ve worked harder than every team that we played and I think that was really the key,” Ibrahim said.
“I knew that they had it in them so I’m just glad that they can now go home and believe that they are good enough to make a [State Cup] run and that Fall was just blimp,” he added.
It was that hard work that took them to their Division’s Championship match where they would face AVSC Storm. Without any goals scored in 80 minutes of regulation and extra time, the game would then move on to the punishing penalty kicks where Santa Barbara SC would come out on top for the 5-4 final mark.
“For me it was one of those games where there were two very even teams and that it was going to be only one goal that was going to separate two teams; it was a matter of who was going to get it,” the Santa Barbara coach said.
“I’m just proud of the girls for not giving up because towards the end they were gassed out and they stayed with it,” he finalized.
