Norco, Calif. (Wednesday, February 21, 2018) – SilverLakes, the premiere 130-acre sports and entertainment facility in the City of Norco, is partnering with the non-profit Heartfelt, to offer free heart screenings to 200 area athletes on February 25, 2018 from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM in conjunction with the 2018 Cal South National Cup tournament. The partnership is the first of its kind in the nation and will screen for the risks of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, starting with this first event.
“SilverLakes is fast becoming the largest center for youth athletics in Southern California and it’s paramount that we take a leadership position in educating and caring for the health of our athletes. Our partnership with Heartfelt begins this strategic effort and is focused on Sudden Cardiac Arrest, the leading cause of death for young athletes,” said RJ Brandes, founder of SilverLakes, in the City of Norco.
Each year, thousands of young athletes die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest – which can possibly be prevented through proactive heart screening – including an electrocardiogram (EKG) & echocardiogram (cardiac ultrasound).
Two families directly impacted by Sudden Cardiac Arrest will be on hand to continue to raise awareness of this condition. The de la Cruz family, has been raising awareness of the danger of Sudden Cardiac Arrest since the death of their son Felipe at age 13, a Cal South member and soccer player with the Irvine Strikers. Their campaign to get youth athletes screened led the Driggs family to get their daughter screened. Through awareness of Felipe’s tragedy and screening, another family’s daughter was saved.
“We are forever thankful to the de la Cruz family and the Heartfelt organization. After screening, my daughter Jadyn was diagnosed with a heart condition, which meant she was at high-risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. She had successful surgery to protect her life, and we will be eternally grateful. We will always have Felipe in our hearts,” said Rhonda Driggs, mother of Jadyn Driggs.
Both families will be on hand to show their support of this important initiative.
“Heartfelt is thrilled with SilverLakes commitment to safeguarding their athletes by collaborating to offer screening. This is the first partnership of its kind. Together, we will be able to protect so many more lives,” said Holly Morrell, Founder of HeartFelt.
