FULLERTON, Calif. (July 13, 2021) – As part of its long-standing annual tradition, Cal South recently announced it has donated $154,000 in subsidies this summer to its Affiliate Member youth teams attending regional and national championship competitions. Often considered as the “ultimate membership benefit” of Cal South, the monetary support is meant to not only aid its teams with entry fee payments for the events they are attending, but also with securing travel and lodging at those events.

Cal South initially provided donations to each of the 36 teams that participated in regional events in June, who ended up collecting seven championship titles in the process. The 23 Cal South teams that attended the 2021 US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals in Boise, ID (June 21–27) received $3,600 each, based on the $1,600 entry fee, along with an additional $2,000 to help with travel and hotel expenses. Six of those teams reached the Finals round and three ultimately stepped onto the podium to hoist regional trophies into the Boise air.

Ten more teams each received a $3,400 donation (entry fee of $1,400 plus $2,000 for travel) for attending the 2021 US Youth Soccer Far West Presidents Cup in Salt Lake City, UT the week before (June 16-20). Cal South teams in Salt Lake captured two regional titles in the US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup Series, and another two regional titles (both in the 12U category) as part of the National Championship Series (NCS), which was held concurrently there. The three NCS teams from Cal South received the same $3,400 donation.

The two Far West Region President Cup champions from Cal South then received an additional $3,000 donation to attend the 2021 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, which was held this past weekend (July 8-11) in Des Moines, IA. In a rain-drenched tournament, the Boys 13U Premier SC Blue walked away victorious with a championship trophy, while Coachella FC ended up as the runner-up finalist in the Girls 14U bracket.

The three Cal South teams that took titles at the Far West Regionals in Boise, along with five other Cal South teams, will next move to the 2021 US Youth Soccer National Championships to be held July 20-25 in Bradenton-Sarasota, FL. Seven of these teams have also received the additional donation of $3,000, bringing the grand total of youth team donations this year to $154,000. (There are no entry fees incurred at the national-level events. All donations for that level are for travel and boarding expenses.)

“Speaking for all of the Cal South board and staff, we are incredibly proud of all of our teams who competed at the regionals,” said Cal South President Roy Carlson, “and we are excited about our teams’ continued prospects at the National Championships. The best way that we can truly show our appreciation for our teams is to have their backs and help ease their way financially in attending these events during these tough economic times. We know they’ll have a great time at Nationals.”

Each year, the Cal South Board of Directors has a certain portion of the annual operating budget set aside to provide donations to teams who find their way to the regionals and nationals via their success at Cal South National Cup, Cal South State Cup, the California Regional League, and the US Youth Soccer National League. The subsidies also cover most Cal South teams selected as wild cards or substitutions for these events.
