Coaching Education
Offered
in both English and Spanish, the Cal South Coaching Education
program licenses over 4,000 youth coaches annually. The different
course curriculums are designed to provide all soccer coaches, from
beginner to advanced with up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge
to help ensure the best development and environment for all of our
players. Just like a contractor should have a license before working
on your home, Cal South has aggressively mandated that all coaches
must attain their age and level appropriate Cal South Coaching License before
stepping onto the field.
Cal
South Referee Development Programs
The
R9 Recreational Referee Program injects over 1,000
newly trained youth referees onto our fields on an annual basis.
Entering its fourth year as a Cal South program, the nine hour referee
course has grown in popularity with its focus not only on the laws
of the game, but its game management role playing exercises and
effective teaching techniques. In addition, Cal South also runs
a year-round Referee Mentor Program and the annual
Youth Referee Development Academy in support and
continued development of our youth referee base.
Olympic Development Program (ODP)
The
most direct route to the U.S. Youth National Teams. The Cal South
ODP Coaching & Scouting Staff scour the youth soccer landscape
annually to identify the top 32 players in each boys and girls age
group from U14 – U18. Upon identification, the aim of ODP
is to place these players on U.S. Youth National Teams by competing
at regional and national level competitions. Cal South ODP teams
have won 14 out of 24 ODP National Championships since its inception
and places over 30% of its players into the U.S. National Team player
pools.
TOPSoccer
The
Outreach Program for Soccer is a Cal South community-based soccer
program that has been serving young athletes with physical and mental
disabilities since 1992. Currently, over 500 such athletes are participating
in Cal South Member League TOPSoccer programs running out of JUSA,
OJSC, Carlsbad Lightning, Long Beach YSO, Victorville and Yucaipa.
Any youth player between the ages of 4-19 years old, having a physical
or mental disability that limits their ability to perform at a recreation
league level of play is eligible for the program. Players are placed
by ability not age and the programs philosophy is to highlight the
athlete’s ability, not their disability.
Cal
South State Cup Tournament
The
pinnacle on the youth soccer Calendar, the Cal South State Cup is
the largest continuous tournament in the country with close to 1,800
annual teams participating. The State Cup is open to all Cal South
Teams and covers the age groups from Under 9 to Under 19. The State
Cup is divided into two competitions: The Cal South State Open Cup
Competition involves teams whose age group champions do not advance
beyond the Cal South State competition and The USYS National Cup
competition involves those teams whose age group champion’s
advance to the USYS regional and national championships held during
the summer of each year. The National Cup involves teams from the
U12 to U19 age groups. The national championships involve the U14
to U19 age groups.
Cal
South Recreational Tournaments
The
Cal South Recreational Tournament calendar features a little of
something for everyone starting with the Hansen’s
Pre-Season Classic as a pre-season warm-up in late August
open to all Cal South Recreational Teams. Finishing up the regular
season in most districts features The Commissioner’s
Cup for recreational teams & The President’s
Cup for recreational all-star teams. Regular season rec.
teams can test their mettle on Thanksgiving Weekend against teams
from across Southern California in the Cal South State Recreational
Championship. And All-Star teams can throw their hat in
the bull-ring at the Cal South Tournament of Champions
in Palm Desert, an all-star championship open to all Cal South Recreational
All-Star Teams.
Cal
South Signature League
The
Cal South Signature League is an advanced recreational soccer gaming
circuit program for youth and families designed to promote skilled
soccer, good sportsmanship, fair play and a safe environment. The
objective of the Cal South Signature League is to provide our members
with an intermediary playing level that better prepares players,
parents and coaches in the transition from recreational play to
competitive club play. In essence, it is a Recreational All-Star
Gaming Circuit with three unique stipulations in place: Every player
gets a minimum of 50% playing time, player fees are capped at $300
per season and travel time is kept in check.
Youth
Development League Program
The
Cal South Youth Development Leagues are designed as a fun instruction-based
introduction to soccer for 5, 6, 7 and 8 year old boys and girls.
These leagues combine learning in a fun and positive environment,
and the excitement of league play through small-sided games. The
program features the professional YDL Handbook created by Cal South
and features “Fun” tested age appropriate practice curriculums
allowing first time coaches to create a fun environment conducive
to learning for their players while alleviating the pressures of
being a first time coach. It is a great program with the focus being
on the development of everyone involved: players, coaches, parents
and the leagues themselves.
Cal
South ODP Youth Academy & College Prep Camp
The
ODP Youth Academy Residential Camps offers an intense & focused
week of training for players (Ages 10 – 13) determined to
improve their game and learn about what it takes to be the best.
Our most experienced Coaching Staff will conduct a training curriculum
modeled after the US Youth National Teams, with an emphasis on technical
training, individual & small group concepts, as well as getting
to play as a team.
Cal
South ODP Summer Camps
In
its seventh year of operation designed for all Boys & Girls
ages 8 to 16 committed to reaching the highest-level open to them
in the sport. They are “developmental” in that our experienced
Camp Staff, already used to dealing with and developing talent at
the state, regional and national levels, will build on and improve
the technical & tactical skills that players have acquired during
the soccer year. Through our program, we will create a challenging
environment where each player will learn about themselves –
their strengths and weaknesses. Players will be encouraged to compete
in and outside of their comfort zones, and will be given the knowledge
and tools to improve.
